Red mullets belong to the Mullidae family and the Perciformes order. The scientific name for the striped red mullet is Mullus surmuletus. The scientific name for the regular red mullet is Mullus barbatus. Red mullet is the generic name applied to two species of fish that live in the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic Ocean: the Mullus surmuletus and the Mullus barbatus. Red mullets have truncated mouths and their barbels are touch and taste receptors able to detect prey. Their body shape and behavior are very similar. They are semi-oily saltwater fish.
