Avocados are originally from Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela. Nowadays they are grown mainly in subtropical regions, and also in Spain, especially in the Costa del Sol and the Canary Islands.

It is a pear-shaped fruit, with a hard and thick skin, whose flesh has a buttery consistency, with a similar flavour to that of the nut. Inside, it contains a single rounded, light brown coloured seed,2-4 cm long, which is covered by a thin, woody layer.

The average weight of an avocado is from 200 to 400 g, even though some can reach up to 2 kg. It is rich in Vitamin A and potassium.
